Why do humans have self destructive tendancies? Even small things like eating junk food, biting our nails, ect...why do we do things that we know aren't good for us?

we are trying to fill an emptiness. that emptiness is bottomless because it will never be filled with self want. paradoxically it is when we forget ourselves and do for others that will we find we are not self destructing

We are human. Are bodies are going to breakdown no matter what we do. The reason we do things that are bad for us, is because it is imposable to do anything that is not bad for us, to some degree.
The reason that we participate in activity that is risky or has the potential to harm us is; because, we need excitement. What would life be like if you never did anything exiting? How would you like to live 60 years with out having any fun for fear of self destructive circumstances and then die of an aneurism while you are sitting on the toilet? What a waste.

Rebellion.
People tend to do things they are told not to do.
I've been chewing my nails for as long as I can remember and it hasn't done anything negative.
Who's to say what is good or bad for me. Everyone is unique to some degree. I could eat junk food and suffer nought whereas another person's teeth may rot or another may become overly obese.
Mind you, I am addicted to cigarettes which may or may not kill me or others; who's to say cigarettes aren't a scapegoat for other things (any type of pollution, something in the drinking water..etc).
I've learned not to believe everything I read or hear especially if it comes from the media or statistics or any government controlled news source (which is just about all of them).
What I'm trying to say is...How do we truly know what is or isn't good for us?

Sometimes it's for the thrill (however small) of doing something you know you shouldn't. Sometimes (like the nail biting) you don't even realize you are, it's just something you do. And junk food? Because it tastes so good :-p

Anything that provides some type of pleasure, no matter how twisted, people will continue to do. Don't you remember the saying; All good things in life are either illegal, immoral or fattening!

Eating junk food is enjoyable, and that is what life is about. And how is biting your nails bad for you?

there's a saying "its always good to do what is bad for us"..others think this one for curiosity..they wanna try everything regardless of how good or bad it is for them ... Most of the teens do something they know is wrong for them to realize themselves that yes it is bad for us. They always want to get some evidences to prove something for themselves. Others are being influenced by their friends as well. Others think of trying whatever it is that is bad for them so as to show that "they have done it and tried it out"...... ego.......

Instant gratification outweighs the future consequence of our actions, that is the only thing that I can think of that explains it.

Because suffering is part of life but when we get in harmony with our true selves and see past suffering we evolve.
