Valentine's Day used to just be for lovers...now, it's a commercially overblown holiday like Christmas. Early January, we're already bombarded with shelves and shelves of heart shaped candy boxes and teddy bears holding plush hearts! Valentines for your coworkers..valentines for little Suzie's classmates...valentines for your kids...valentines for your friends...valentines for your Grandmother, stepson, and Uncle Joe....Where does the maddness end? I told my sig. other that I don't want to even celebrate Valentines Day this year because it is so commerciallized. People are literally made to feel inadequate or hurt if they don't give or receive a $12.99 chocolate heart on the commercially designated day. Why do we need to be told WHEN to show affection for people we care about? What is wrong with this country?

THANK YOU! I completely agree! I answered another ? earlier saying that on v-day I DON'T want that stuff. V-Day is when it means the least! I don't want sweet things done for me like cards or candy because he feels like he HAS to! I want them because he WANTS to! Like some random day if I'm having a bad day and he brings me flowers on my lunch hour, now THAT'S special! I don't celebrate it either. I think it's more of a kiddie thing anymore. Who gets the most valentines, and in HS who got the most balloons, etc. I got flowers once, and that was enough for me. I had my special v-day and now I'm over it.

One word - commercialism!

All of the holidays have turned away from their primary meaning and fallen pray to the greed of businesses to make more money. Proof of this is that stores bring out their displays for the upcoming holidays earlier and earlier each year so to push people to buy more.

For this Valentine's Day, give your sweetheart a kiss and surprise them with a candle lit dinner at home followed by a romantic evening watching movies and sharing affectionate touches and words.

I wouldn't say that it has become like Christmas, but I do agree that it has become a free-for-all. I wish it was only for sweeties or secret admirers/admire-es. However, I do bake and decorate-with-chocolate, around 200 or so sugar cookies and distribute them among co-workers, the postman, the kids' classes, and whoever happens to be around on the 14th (male only); oh, and my husband & kids.

tell me about it...everything is commercialized, everybody's trying to make a buck, actually "many bucks". i couldn't agree more, what's sad is we've lost the true meaning of all these holidays in all this "gift giving commercialization". OH, and by the way, i've already ordered my valentines' edible creations basket-:)
