Its blue and green... and it is an old style maxim. Sort of like strips and checks. White after labor day. etc. Has nothing to do with art.

Red and Green are the opposites on the color wheel.
Primary colors; yellow, red, blue
Secondary colors; green, purple, orange
you mix 2 of the primaries to get he secondary colors.
red + blue = purple (the opposite of yellow)
red + yellow = orange (the opposite of blue)
blue + yellow = green ( the opposite of red)
So the saying must go "Red and Green never seen." because they are opposites on the color wheel.
