Do you tell the person that you want to change the subject? Or do you just change the subject and hope they don't notice?

If it's on the phone, it's easy. I end the call by saying I have to go to the bathroom, whether I do or not.
In person, much more difficult. Depending on who it is (can't get around my mother) I can say, "I don't want to go there" or just skirt into another subject. My mother, obviously a master skirter, can turn any conversation around to weight loss....and I have trouble steering it somewhere else.

Tell them that the subject makes you uncomfortable, and if they ask, simply say "personal reasons". And then change the topic.

Say something totally out of the subject, in order to begin something new, like we're talking about football, and they just started mentioning your team which has lost, I say "Guess who I ran into the other day??" and begin an entire new topic...
Works every time ;)

Yes you tell them to change the subject, I do this all the time
or if you dont want to offend them just pretend you're paying attention and do something else.

I change the subject- if you practice it can be so smooth that the other person doesn't even notice.

I just take off my pants.
I have found that is the best way to make people stop talking.
Sometimes that also creates a good problem as well.
You should try it sometime.
