You are directing your attention to the person (or sound)
you are listening to. You want to hear it.
It is not that you hear it by chance, it is active and willful.

You are welcome

You don't just hear what is being said; you actually listen to what is meant. For instance, a typical good listener will sit near the front, center of the classroom, lean forward (toward) the speaker, perhaps take relevant notes, make eye contact with the speaker (which shows interest and paying attention), occasionally nod in agreement or disagreement, etc.

Actively listening means you are taking notes, writing questions that you have when you listen, and asking those questions for further clarification. It is more like a conversation between two people. Your thoughts are extremely focused on what the other person is saying, while you note their body posture and the tone of their voice.

You are absolutely paying attention to the speaker while taking notes, thinking of questions, asking the questions and writing the answers.
