William Peterson (the actor who played Gil Grissom) probably taking a long break from the show. So the producer plot the story line as follows:

Grissom took a sabatical on January 4th, 2007 after announcing that he is to teach a class at Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts for four weeks. He has tapped Catherine Willows to be acting supervisor in his absence.

In truth, William Petersen takes a sabbatical leave to do on-stage performance. But it's only for a few weeks.
Gil Grissom is said to go teaching on a seminar.

I think they have him taking a sabbatical for a while, teaching somewhere, I believe. Isn't that typical? After all those years of "sexual tension" between Gil and Sara, they finally give in, and then he just up and leaves.

In real life, the actor is doing some plays or theater or something. I heard that he'll be back sometime in February.
