You can't go wrong with Studio Ghibli! They have so many wonderful stories (even romance) and the artwork is just breathtaking which makes you want to watch it again and again just to catch all those beautiful details.

Laputa: Castle in the Sky (1986)
Grave of the Fireflies (1988)
My Neighbor Totoro (1988)
Kiki's Delivery Service (1989)
Only Yesterday (1991)
Porco Rosso (1992)
Ocean Waves (1993)
Pom Poko (1994)
Whisper of the Heart (1995)
Princess Mononoke (1997)
My Neighbors the Yamadas (1999)
Spirited Away (2001)
The Cat Returns (2002)
Howl's Moving Castle (2004)
Tales from Earthsea (2006)

I must say all of them were brilliant although I found it hard to watch "Grave of the Fireflies" because it's a very sad tale.

I hope you like animation.... if not then just ignore this list of babble. Hope you find a few good movies....

I liked a number of raomantic movies such as
"Chungking Express" ( It's Art House film and was the first film I had watched which used the slow/live motion with speeding background before it became common in pop videos and big budget films)

"As Tears Go By"
"Bullet in the Head"
" Hard Boiled" (was great at time and now looks cheesy! haha)
"A Chinese Ghost Story"
"A Better Tomorrow"
"Farewell my Concubine" (stunning film & love story with Gong Li)
"Raise the Red Latern" (Gong Li)
"Prison on Fire"

I can go on and on...... ah, must warn you a few of those titles are a bit violent (great if your into romance & violent combination then go go it!)

You can check out each of those titles on Wikipediahttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page

Or go to The International Movie Database:
http://uk.imdb.com/

Hope all this helps. Hmm..talking of all this makes me feel like watching one of those titles again.

Three very good ones are:

"Hero" with Jet Li - it's an historical drama with some truly beautiful cinematography. Truly an epic film

"House of Flying Daggers" - Similar to Hero but more of a personal love story

"Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" - Tale of revenge, good drama. Again has beautiful cinematography shot in some stunning locations.
