I can see how she interpreted it as referring to Autism; because think of this: If her son is already delayed in some things, "early intervention" would be too late for those particular delays. Even if the term applies to other therapies, Autism is the condition that gets worse as children get older and don't have treatment. I can see why she would think that, and I can see, too, why she may have just been offended because she may have thought she could have a conversation about what her son was or wasn't doing, without having it "assumed" she thinks he has something wrong. In any case, "early intervention" for any delays on which "the shipped has sailed already" wouldn't be an appropriate suggestion; so she's probably thinking you're imagining worse than just "late bloomer".
