It makes a barking noise rather than a neighing like the horse. They also snort when they are alarmed

I'm a zoo keeper and I can confirm that Zebras are normally quiet, appearing mute even, however (mainly when they are distresed) they do make a braying sound much like a donkey does.

The clue is in the name. Zebra. They walk around going 'Zebra, zebra, zebra' all day. Funnily enough, this has been translated from the swahili as 'do stripes make me look fat'

they do sound more like donkeys than horses, although it's a bit higher pitched than a donkey.

It snorts like a horse. They are sooo beautiful. We had two that visited us close to the one house we lived in. We lived close to a animal park . :))
