I've been told that it is because you have to go pee, but since I'm a girl, what do I know. All I have to worry about is pointy nipples when it's cold.

Because you forgot to take off your underwear when you went to bed. Seriously, it is normal for almost all guys, from teens to 70's if they are lucky, to often if not daily wake up with a partial or full erection. Your penis while you sleep exercises. The body pumps blood into it a number of times through the night, to keep the tissues well nourished. If you had a sleepover with another guy, and watched him all night (though that would be creepy) you'd see that he'd have maybe 6-9 erections throughout the night. Just a way the body keeps itself in good sexual health. Don't try and pee right away if you have a full erection, as some suggest doing with morning wood. Let it go down some, your body is designed to not allow urine to escape during a full erection, and forcing it to just to empty your bladder can lead to some problems such a leakage on down the line when you are older.
Just consider your morning woody as a sign "I'm healthy, horny and ready to go!"

The erections you refer to are actually night time (nocturnal) erections which happen while you're asleep. Men begin having them in early childhood and they continue throughout adult life. They appear during REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep -- the stage of sleep where dreaming occurs.
However, these involuntary erections have nothing to do with dreams or sexual excitement. They occur when neurological stimulators cause blood to flow into the penis. This ensures that oxygen is properly delivered to the penis and helps keep penile tissue healthy.
Men don't normally notice these erections, but may occasionally encounter them upon waking. About 4 or 5 of these hard episodes happen every night, and yes -- all men have them. Men who are unable to have an erection because of a psychological problem still have erections during the night.
Many men say that "morning" or nocturnal erections are noticeably harder than those during the day. This is normal, and a natural result of nocturnal erections.
The frequency of night time erections vary with age and only medical conditions such as sleep disorders or severe depression will keep some men from having them. In these cases, a urologist should be consulted.
All other men should be rock hard during those sleeping hours !

Morning Wood or Morning Glory is caused by a misinterpretation in your brain while you sleep. What happens is while you sleep your body digests food that you have eaten and your bladder gets full, and in the sleeping state the mind works, but it doesn't understand the need to urinate, so it goes to the next logical thing, arousal. You get an erection, but when you wake up the brain starts to work properly again so it tells you to urinate, but it still thinks that you're aroused. Thats why taking a leek gets rid of it.

Because you're a normal male. Most men wake up with an erection. It just happens. There's been lots and lots of talk about why it happens, but there's never been a clear concrete answer. Enjoy the fact that you're normal.

Most healthy men often wake up in the morning with an erection. "Morning wood" is a slang term for this. Men have several erections a night as part of their sleep cycle. Many times they wake up and find they are still erect.
A man's penis becomes erect in response to sexual arousal and excitement, but it can also become erect as a result of deep relaxation, such as what's experienced in deep sleep — with or without dreams. An erection is caused by a rush of blood to the penis. A man's penis, especially a young man's penis, can also become erect without any kind of arousing stimulation — this is called a "spontaneous erection."
Hope this information helps!
