Anime in the US, i don't know how it is in other countries, is being sold at $20 and up per DVD of what is at least a 3 DVD set. From what I hear the biggest reason for this ripoff is licensing rights.
Does anyone have any ideas on how to reduce this cost?
If not, what about ways to sell it so that we don't pay as much?

Comicards - I'm not asking anyone to work for free. I'm asking why is so much being paid to say "you own this in your country, go nuts" and what can be done to, if nothing else, lower that initial cost, or at least lower the down payment or something.
I'm well aware i know less than nothing about licensing rights, that's why I ask.
That, and who am I asking to work for free? not the animators or any of the original staff. They were already paid and have the fruits of their labor.
I don't think I'm asking the (insert country here) staff to. If they can pony up the dough for the rights, and then hire and pay the staff, then they're already set, and the savings in rights may go to us, which will cause more sales (won't buy for $25, but would for $17 or so) causing more profits which can be used to pay their staff.
Sorry if the question confused you, or wasn't worded properly, but I'm not asking anyone to do anything for free. That's just stupid. I'm wondering where costs can be cut.

Excuse me, but you're obviously rather young & don't understand all the costs involved in bringing this type of material, or *any type of creative content* to market.

Essentially, you're asking other people to work for free, or less than market wages, for your own benefit.

Or you're expecting the creative talent to work for free.

Just how do you think these people keep food on the table, a roof over their heads & the wolf from the door?

modify) OK, but a fundamental "law" of capitalism is that the lower priced good or service will sell better, all other things equal, so therefore publishers, manufacturers et al will keep their prices as low as 'reasonably' possible to achieve maximum volume.

Perhaps you have a different definition of 'reasonable'.

There is no reason why, just because the creators have been paid in their own market, say Japan, that they should NOT be paid for publication & distribution in another market, say the USA. If you had written/drawn a story & been paid in this country, you'd expect to be paid for it to be released/sold in Japan. Right?

Once the rights have been sold in a new country or market, the 'new' publisher still has all the costs of taxes, labor, taxes, material, taxes, supplies, taxes, advertising, taxes, overhead, and, of course, taxes. (If you think I'm joking about the taxes, just try running a business in this country.) (No offense intended.) (Seriously. Most people who haven't been in 'cost' 'management' do NOT understand how much money it takes to be or stay in business.)

Sorry if it sounds hurtful guys, but business is just WAY more expensive to run than the average customer understands. Not because the average customer is stupid, per se, but the average customer lacks both UNDERSTANDING OF and CONCERN FOR the merchant's cost of doing business. They tend to think of them as the merchants problem. Well, they are, and the merchant solves these cost problems by adding them into the price of the good or service. But, "all other things equal", all merchants sell their goods or services as inexpensively as their costs will allow, in order to maximize volume, and therefore profits.

Don't just sneer at it, or ignore it; open your own business & run it at a profit AND pay your bills on time. It's not quite as easy as it appears.

And what goes for merchants also goes for publishers, distributors, etc.

imaging u own a company and u pay someone for the licence fee who draw a manga and was very popular to turn it into a animated TV...and what about the lawyer fee?... and those who works on the animes?... what about the voice acter and actress?
the subtitling? and where do u think u get the money from to pay off this fees? LOL and to think u would want to let people who didn't pay enjoy your animes? u must be nuts right? sry not u i mean if this really happens....

I don't think there is any way to cut it down unless u wait till there is a discount. i bet there is a year end sale or clearing sale some where or some how... may be there is a website just for your country which have info on that... also may be older anime are cheaper then usure price...

O BTW if u think buying is too expensive y not download it? there is a lot fansub which is subbing animes and send them out for free and they are quite accurate too... but is still best to buy the DVD to support the creater and those behide the scene...

reguarding download: use torrent or go on IRC

anidb.info <-- this is for u to check fansubs and anime info it may not be up-to-date or may be not right after the fansubs releast but is very close to it...

This a also a good question too i sometimes wonder myself before buying and animes DVD or VCD... it's also selling quite expensive down here...

and er... i think the words came from comicards is a bit too hurtful... is not that your wrong or something but readers will think your angry about something

iTunes style of distributing?

Speaking of iTunes, were any Japanese animation sold in the iTunes?

Has Sony ever ask Apple to distribute their collections?

Anyway. In Japan, Nintendo sell around U$5 per Pocket Monster or other Japanese animation title episode to be played using the Game Boy video player.

And many Japanese animation were sold in many other countries at the average price of other animation were sold. An official VCD might go as low as U$5 per piece.
