"The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress" by Robert Heinlein-no pirates, but very good.

"The Gathering Flame" by Debra Doyle and James MacDonald, features some pirating type stuff. Prequel to a very good series called "The Magewars."

"Shards Of Honor" by Lois McMaster Bujold another prequel but it is a good starting point for the Miles Vorkorsigan stories. It is the same series Longshire (below) suggests. Miles Vorkosigan starts a mercenary branch of his planet's defense forces for covert operations in "The Aprentice Warrior."

Any of Elizabeth Moon's sci-fi books are great - she does Space pirates well.

Well, try Lois McMaster Bujold, start with Cordelia's Honor, and then the Miles Vorkosigan Series. (The Warrior's Apprentice, et al).

The Heinlein juveniles (written for adults, but they were his earlier books).

Try David Weber in his Honor Harrington series (but he gets really pedantic in the middle, you've just got to skip the political crap).

Enjoy!

Try Douglass Adams (Hitch hikers guide to the galaxy). I especially liked the long dark tea time of the soul.
