Yes future it can also be termed as WP (walky phone), MP (Micro phone) or even PP (palm phone) or WP (wrist Phone)

Mobil phones did not start out as pocket phones. They started as attachments in cars / trucks ( Looked a lot like the old style phones you still see in older movies and were attached to a large bulky box ) and were considered mobile because the car was mobile not the phone. Used to have to call up a special operator to be used and they sure did NOT fit in your pocket. In those days( not that long ago either ) you / I the average person wouldn't have one because we could 'nt afford it!!!!!! Think of big business , Texas oil men , government officials ( higher ranking not the aids ) and you might get the picture. I remember seeing my first one in some ones car and just "knowing " that that person had to "BE SOMEONE " .

Well its something like a catch 22... Had it been named a pocket phone, then the question would have been that it could have been named as a mobile phone!

Well, I guess it is so named since it uses frequencies in the mobile communication's range!!

Since all of them who carries don't use pockets, it cannot be given a common name as pocket phone. But mobile phone is the name given as every one can use it during mobility also.

The phone is mobile meaning it is able to moved away from a source of electrical power. It is interesting the various names given to such phones. The French call it " Le portable " ( able to be carried ). The Germans call it " Das Handy " referring to the fact that it is hand-held. In some English speaking countries it is also called a " Cell Phone " from the word cellular

When cell phones first came out, and even before that, any phone used in a vehicle was called a mobile phone. Today that term is extended to all cell phones.

Previously Phone was known as fixed line phone which was not supposed to move with you. When Cellular phone came in existance, it changed the meaning of fixed phones. So this phone automatically known as MOBILE PHONE.

Mobile phone is so called because it means you are able to move freely or easily anywhere at anytime, something you can't do with a house phone.

you know what mobile means? portable, movable, able to move around. phone i think is self explanitary. yes it could be known as a pocket phone but unfortunatly it is not

Mobile indicates that it is moving, or removable from your home, or the phone jack as with land lines. Most people I know just call it their cell phone...
