College people use them on there laps quite frequently. Mobile pc's are almost the size of a cell phone now. That's what I consider to be a mobile pc.

May be becasue people uses it by keeping on their lap, this term might have arrived. But Laptop is a mobile computer only.

laptops are definitely mobile pc's, but not only them..
palmtop PC, pocket PC, some PDAs are all belongs to this category.... laptops usually uses on the lap, hence the name, palm top PCs can be in the palm, pocket PCs could in pocket...
nothing more than a simple attractive name given by the vendor..!!

Well, there were such machines as mobile PCs that had CRT monitors and keyboards that attached to the case for suitcase like transport. I guess when they came up with laptops they wanted to differentiate them from those early mobile PCs.

The term laptop is outdated. It was introduced in 1983 and whenever I hear it I get nostalgic of old monochromatic lunchboxes that were all the rage then. Coz it can be used by placing over the lap. May be very few people use it on the lap, but the actual cause of desingning is to use it over the lap. But when we have table or desks, we place over them. You can feel the actual use of laptops, when you dont have any mode to place it.

Because it was so huge when first came out, if there's no desk, you had to sit down and use it on the lap.
