Asoka..the third and the most famous king of the maurya dynasty..he adopted Buddhism and formulated a moral, humanitarian code of conduct which he termed as dhamma...dhamma is the Prakrit(an ancient language) derivation of the Sanskrit word drama, which means religion, but dhamma was way of life and not a religion...which Asoka preached to his people..basic moral duties of a citizen...respect and love for fellow people, respect for elders and teachers, ahimsa....non-violence, not hurting any creature...etc, etc..he actually gave up the policy of war, and adopted a policy of love, peace and respect for all..he was also the first king to officially send Buddhist missionaries to sri-lanka, Burma, and parts of south east asia..and because of this he is rightly called Asoka the great..
there are some very good sites on Asoka and his religious policies if you are interested to know more...
