if there are children involved than your always going to need to talk, but if your not married than there is no reason to ever speak to that person again. many relationships have been ruined by ex's. best to leave the ex in the past and not communicate anymore with them.

My ex and I were very close. Even during our emotional breakup that lasted a year, we were there for each other despite being the source of each other's pain. We were the best of friends and we cared greatly for each other as human beings. My wife has since threatened to kill me if I ever talk to my ex again so I no longer have contact, but I am positive my ex still cares about me greatly as I care about her. This doesn't mean we want to date again, it just means our bond formed years ago is enduring regardless.
There are other cases where I am sure people talk to their ex because they want them back or can't quite let go.

In my case I like my ex who is the father of my kids to go and not contact. When I was with him he didn't want to be daddy unless he got attention and he shouldn't want to be now. I feel he should just sign his rights over and let my fiancee who loves the kids like they are his be their dad.
Sorry for venting...Just had to get that off my chest!

That's the same thing I have thought about. You call them ex for a reason. I would find it weird to be buddies with my ex and have shared things with them.

Sometimes exes stay friends. I didn't stay friends with mine, but that was just the way our relationship ended up.
A bit sad now as we have grandchildren, and it would be nice to be able to share a little bit with them.

i think its because at one point, you shared a deep relationship with that person. You tell him/her everything. And to go from that, to never speaking is tough. I mean, how can you ignore someone, when at one point you guys were the closest?

Not everyone who gets divorced hates each other. Sometimes they just realize that they weren’t met to be married. That doesn’t necessarily mean that they can’t continue to be friends.

because at times the ex was your best friend, and if a friendship could be salvaged then it'll probably be one of your best friendships of all

Usually due to unresolved feelings or lack of "closure". (kinda reminds me of that Friends episode when Rachel told Ross over the answering machine that she was over him, and he was like, "When were you...under me?" LOL) Anyway, that is usually the reason.
