I look on many aspects, like whether they sound intelligent in conversation, whether their life choices seem smart, what they have achieved in life (not only professionally) and how open they are to new ideas and learning new things.

To me a smart (intelligent) person is one who can converse on various topics rather than dwelling on just one or two.

Being informed on world events(doesn't have to be real in depth but at least know what is going on to some degree)-is also basic to a well rounded/informed person.

I have erroniously been called intelligent many times and it is erronious. I just happen to read books on many diverse subjects-wrote a nowspaper column on world, local and state events based on thought and what I have read, realizing the written word isn't always accurate so checking many writings on a topic is almost essential to try and come up with what is hype and what is truth. Isn't politics a great example since we are lied to right and left by politicians who will tell whatever group they are addressing what they want to hear.

One criteria that helps me is if a person's main subject is themselves-scuse it here-"I" and "me" are great conversation killers.

Usually after having a conversation about something that is in my eyes stimulating. And I can't tell if someone is really smart, just smarter than me. I may think they're really smart because they know a lot more than me, but an MIT grad may think they are dumb because they know less than them. But basically, if you're not really up on current events such as BASIC politics and world news, like those "street" people they interview that don't even know who the Vice Prez is or what the diff btwn rep/dem is, as long as you are an american and have the chance to know these things, then in my eyes you're not that intelligent.

An Intelligence Quotient test.

Followed by a pop quiz on "Back to the Future".

To answer your question more thoroughly, I usually consider intelligence based on their ability to use logic and reason to solve problems and think critically. I also like to have conversations with fully fact-loaded debate slingers. Poor diction is an indication to me that not all of the person's dogs are barking.

Ask a question that I already know the answer to. Having intelligence and using that intelligence are two different things. To me intelligence doesn't mean a thing. IMO Common Sense over-rules intelligence anytime. I'm not sure why it's called "common" though.

Good question, I guess it depends on why type of "smart" you are looking for? Like whether you are looking for street smart or academic smart or both. Personally, I think I am of average intelligence but academically I am lacking. So who knows. I hope you get the answers you are looking for.

I don't think you can really judge anyone's intelligence, most people are always learning new things or have the ability to learn new things daily whether small or minor. (unless they are medically certified to have some disease or retardation or delay.) You can have geniuses with no commensense, you can have street smarts but can't read or spell well. Do we judge people by their knowledge or ability to learn? I suspect...... you can judge human intelligence by what they are willing to learn and teach.

By the way they speak and write. A person cannot pretend to be intelligent nor can they hide the fact once they start speaking.
