Best to swap chips about and see if the computer can find and confirm the size of the new chip in a different slot. Perhaps swap the new 1gb with the old one, leaving the remainder as they were, this should confirm if the new chip is being recognised and working, or if faulty

If ALL sticks are 333Mhz,
Slot 1 = 1Gb.
Slot 2 = 1Gb.
Slot 3 = 256Mb.
Slot 4 = 256Mb.
If it sitll does it, try removing your 256's see what it comes to when you boot. It could be defective, or it may not support single sided, that is, the 1 GB sticks may have to be double sided.(Chips on both sides)

I doubt it's a BIOS problem. You had all 4 slots filled before and working properly, apparently. My guess is you got a bad stick of RAM.
