If NASA ever stops stuffing everyone around and launches a space flight that takes us OUT of the Earth's orbit for the first time in about 10 or 15 years, then I would say an American will be the first on Mars, simply because they want to be first at everything and boast to the world how good they are.
But I am more than hoping the European Space Administration (ESA) will kick start their career and land someone first.

A dead man.
A one way trip takes 2 years. There is no air, water, temperature is extreme. To supply and sustain a person for 2 years timeframe, assuming just one way ticket cost an enormorus amount of cargo to go with. Even someone is craze enough to build the ship and voyage.
Any mishap, which likely to happen is fatal.
