You don't seriously expect an answer to that one to be written right here, do you? I don't think Yahoo allows answers quite that lengthy.

Wiki (see link) has a pretty good overview if you want something fairly brief.
There's a History of Science society which has a lot of info on the topic as well. (see link)
For pre-college level books, check the library for items written by George Gamow.
