Some say it should be illegal to burn the American flag, because that amounts to a desecration. That is according to many Republican politicians. By that same logic, shouldn't the possession of a confederate flag be outlawed, since that ALSO amounts a desecration of the American flag? Our union is threatened by the burning of the American flag much as it is by the flying of the flag of our previous civil enemy. Isn't that hypocritical of proponents of a ban on American flag burning?
Flying a confederate flag is not the same as flying the State flag of Louisiana, for example. That's because the confederate flag was supposed to apply to all of the states, not just the south. Plus, the Southern states now fly the American flag, "old glory".Flying the confederate flag is also not the same as flying a foreign flag, or the foreign flag of an enemy we fought in a war. That is because Americans were fighting other Americans. It is therefore an internal civil matter.

Yes, it should. If you want to separate from the union, please move to Iraq or somewhere else.

The Confederate battle flag stood for the idea that the individual states were separate entities loosely grouped under the Constitution. Consider the following two quotes. "If the Union can be preserved with slavery I will do it for the war is not about slavery, it is about saving the Union." Abraham Lincoln, in his first Inaguaral address. "If I thought this war was about slavery, I would give my sword to the other side." U.S. Grant, 1862 Consider also the timing of the Emancipation Proclamation. If the Lincoln Administration truly wanted to fight a war to free the slaves, Lincoln would not have waited until 1862 to release the Proclamation. Finally, statisitcs prove that less than 2% of the Southern population were the large plantation owners depicted in Uncle Toms Cabin. If you asked any 10 Confederate soldiers why they wore the gray, well, a young Alabama boy put it best after being captured at Shiloh. "Im fightin because you all are down here." Would the questioner have us burn the flag of Britain, a former enemy? How about Japan? Or Mexico? I'm going to close with another quote from a Lincoln speech, made shortly before his death. "With malice toward none, and with charity for all....." The basis of a democracy is the right to dissent. You certainly have the right to believe as you do, but not to the point where you desecrate the memory of close to half a million young men who gave their all for what they believed..

It's absolutely not illegal for any individual to display the Confederate flag or any other flag on public property. It's protected under the 1st Amendment. Most people don't understand how the SC law works..... South Carolina passed the law to remove the flag from the State Capital in an official capacity but that law cannot prohibit private citizens from displaying the flag or design on Tee shirts, cars, or any personal means.

I disagree with the confederate flag and all, but I still say it should be allowed becuase of freedom of speech. And even though it may seem contradictory, I also believe that anyone desecrating an American flag should be made to leave the country because to me, that's basically declaring war on America. I wouldn't trust them and would feel that they pose a constant threat to the American way of life. If they hate America that much there is no reason whatsoever they should be living here.

Why should it be illegal to fly a flag that is a piece of our history. Some people are proud of their history. If it were to be illegal to fly the Confederate flag, then it should be illegal to fly the black & white POW flag, which is seen all over the place, right along with the American flag and state flags.

The hard part of supporting the Constitution is that you have to support the rights of people you may hate.

That is what the ACLU does.

That is what a true American does.

So the right to own and display a confederate flag, a nazi flag, a communist flag, a french flag, etc. etc. must be supported.

It is a heavy price to pay but a necessary one. It is something that the administration has chosen to be ignorant of for the last six years. Just one of many ways the Constitution has been undermined. Read HB 1166 AR.

It's a piece of history. Do you think that we shouldn't fly the original 13 stars and stripes?

I used to have a flag from every era of american history, I lost most of them when my uncle's house flooded during an earthquake (pipes broke and flooded his basement). It's all about context.

It is not illegal, but it is disrespectful to our nation and to other Americans.

I am always hurt when people burn our flag. I think they should just make a law that all American flags be made of inflammable material.

The confederate flag only stirs up hate and doesn't include all 50 states, and that is disrespectful to the United States too.
