a few tricks for breeding Betta's :
set up a ten gallon aquarium with no gravel. Put black paper under the tank so the male will see the missed (dropped) eggs to retrieve them
Only put about 5-6 inches of water in it (not too deep so the male will go down to get lost eggs) preferably rain water
Condition the male and female seperately feeding natural foods (bloodworms, tubifex, brine shrimp....) before attempting to breed them.
Place the male in the tank for a day or two then at night float the female in a see through cup. This will excite the male without allowing him to attack the female. In the morning the male will have a nest blown and will be much calmer when you release the female. breeding should take place quite quickly . be sure to remove the female soon after or the male may kill her good luck

Breeding Betta isn't quite like others. Bettas are aggressive when breeding. The water should be kept at 77-86 F (25-30 C) For breeding leave it at the higher temperatures. The male will actually go after her (courting) and turn her pretty much upside down (he embraces her with his arched body). He will help release the eggs, fertilize them and keep them in the bubble nest. The female should be removed after breeding takes place as the brood is looked after the male. The eggs will hatch after 24-30 hrs; remove the male as well after about 3 days.Check this out http://www.flippersandfins.net/bettabreedingarticle.htm

bettas are awkward fish to breed indeed. check the link below for a good detailed guide on breeding bettas.

you may also need to review the equipment you have ready for any fry, live food for example this should be already set up and growing. several dozen 1 gallon tanks and a warm place to keep them for male grow out, a 20 gallon for the fry to start to mature before they can be sexed...etc..etc...and be ready to care for anything between 2 and 200 fry, and homes planned for them, not every LFS will take offspring, and theres a high chance you'll end up with 3/4 of them being females, and most fish stores have no interest in girls, especially if they're just mutt veiltails...

don't mean to be all negative, i'm all for people breeding bettas, i just try to make sure it's been well planned before hand so you don't get into trouble or end up with dead fish half way through. or end up with 50 hungry bettas with no homes to go to...

Wow. Punctuation and capitalization needed. I guess i cant blame you in a time like this though. I read online that it is normal for them to fight and chase each other at first. Just keep a close eye out on them and they should be ok. If he beats her up too bad you'll want to take her out and try again another time. After a few tries and it still doesn't work you'll know that your fish just aren't right for each other. Seriously. Not compatable, and you should try them with different mates.
