Uses include steelmaking and ironmaking due largely to it's deoxidizing properties. Manganese is sometimes included in gasoline to boost the octane rating. It has also been used for glass coloring and making some types of paints.

Over 80% of the known world manganese resources are found in South Africa and Ukraine.
