There is history to any story, even fabricated ones. For example, the creation story can tell you a lot about the Hebrews. Unless you take the story of Adam and Eve as literally true (my Catholic college and high school stressed that science and other factors lead us to believe that its not but none-the-less it has an important message for us). You learn from this story about the minds of the Hebrews, this is how they thought creation happened to their limited knowledge of the world. But, the sacred part came in because of the message(s) (Our connection to God). So half and half really.
I think its up to every individual to look at the Bible and make sense of it, sacred, other, etc... for themselves.

If you are a committed Christian, then the Bible is sacred. If you are a Muslim then the Koran is sacred, All religions have sacred texts. Since they can't all be true, I tend to think that none are. Certainly, some parts of the Bible are history -the Old Testament is the oral history, written down many years later, of the Jewish people. The early parts are fantasy - the two stories of creation contained in Genesis for example. All unscientific people had a explanation for how the world around them came into being. Of course, they were only guesses and no sensible person now believes that the Earth was created in 7 days. There can be no doubt that their is much moral teaching in the Bible that is very important and which they world would be better for observing. It is interesting, however, to observe how people pick and choose what they want to apply in their own lives. A person may be very moral and observe the commandment 'not to commit adultery', but is quite happy to join an army and kill people . There are equally many precepts - not eating pork, not sleeping with your wife whilst she is menstruating, etc., which are not relevant to a 21st century world.

How can you go to the doctor when what they've learned stems from centuries of painful and often barbaric trail and error to treat patients? How can you live in your country and be patriotic knowing it's past is most likely saturated in bloodshed? Everyone and everything was 'primitive' and 'barbaric' back in the day- and to some degree we haven't moved on from that. Hell, lobotomies happened only a few decades ago. Religion doesn't kill anyone; people kill people. And there are crazies in every group. Just as there are wonderful people who benefit from going to church, there's Christians that blow up abortion clinics. There are Muslims who are kind and welcoming, peaceful people, and there are Muslims who drive planes into buildings. Now, to more properly answer your question: One: Religion does not scare me. People scare me. - The Bible is an object. It can't hurt anyone. It's people that can take ideas, warp them, and do harm to others with them. - The Bible's main focus is living life free of sin- such as hurting others- and loving one another. Any Christian that contradicts this is a hypocrite. (Yes, this means you, Christians who hate queers) Two: Your second question is so saturated in bias and opinion that it cannot really be answered. No scientist has ever been able to prove the existence of God, or the absence of Him. We are also not aware, nor probably ever will be, of the fact that the people who wrote the Bible themselves were 'barbaric' and, indeed, could have been quite educated in their time.

The bible is faith. It cannot be proven or disproven, but it difficult to ignore it's ability to predict the futre. Examples; centuries before Aristotle guess the Earth was round the the bible said in Genesis "The world is a sphere hanging apon nothing". The bible also predicted the advent of the automobile (a self moving chariot moving in any direction) in Revelation. It predicted rapid climate change and the increase of damaging natural disasters. It predicted the United Nations. It says the tower of bable will never be reconstructed, and in 1990 Saddam Hussien tried to rebuild it. A few months later the 1rst gulf war broke out and scud missile went 20 miles off course and slammed right into it. It remains as rubble. People get excited about Nostrodomis for predicting 2 or 3 significant events but the bible laid out an entire map of world history before it happend. Is it true though? Can't prove it. When Moses parted the Nile it was a miracle. Nowadays we can see through history, every 20 years or so there is an earthquake in the area that stops the rivers flow for a few days. etc.. It's faith, that's the point of the bible. It is neither true or untrue.

The Bible is a life changing book to read. If you can understand it's message, The Bible can help you change the good and bad in your life. I sometimes question it's truth in it's stories and soon feel guilty for doing so. One must decide this answer for themselves. Here are some facts, The Bible is the #1 selling book of all times. It took longer to write than any other book and has more authors than any other book of it's kind. I hope to god it is true or our life was just this one. I cry sometimes at the fact that we(humans) are the only species on this planet that knows we will die. The Bible gives people hope that there is a life of some type after this life on Earth.

Great question!

First of all, the word sacred, or holy, comes from the Greek word "hagios" in the Bible, which is translated "holy or sacred." It literally means "something set aside for a special purpose."

So, yes, the Bible is holy. It has a special purpose to communicate God's truth to the word through human words. Was it written by men? Yes, but God used that tool to communicate his message. But the key question is whether or not we can believe it, which is what I think you're asking.

Well, if you research the archeological and historical evidence for the Bible, you will find that it stands up very well to skeptics. I am skeptical by nature, but I have been convinced that the Bible is a true and historical book. References include the books: "Suprised by Faith," by Don Bierle, a scientist who researched the bible to disprove it, but came to the conclusion is was historically accurate; "Letters from a Skeptic," by Greg Boyd, which is a series of real letters between and an atheist father and a Christian son, and, finally, "The Case for Christ," and "The Case for Faith," by Lee Strobel, a former atheist and a well respected legal journalist.

The bottom line: much of the history Bible is well established, especially the New Testament. Jesus is recorded in Roman historical records as having been crucified by Pontius Pilate (see the writings of Tacitus), and the major people are recognized as real historical figures. Much of the New Testament is simply letters between Christian apostles, and not some sort of myth or fairy tale.

The big question isn't really whether or not it's fiction- it's "do you believe what it teaches?" That's something each person has to answer for himself or herself.

Great question!

The bible is the word of God. Though I believe it has lost very much in the several translations from the originally found rolls & scrolls to the King James version, and all translations that followed. I do not believe in any worldly religion. People hear the word 'religion' and immediately associate God with it.I believe in the one, triune God and the son Jesus. God is not in religion, and He will not be found there, in my opinion. God is real. More real in fact than the keys I am pecking and more real than this table my computer is sitting on. Take the bible how you will and treat it as you will. I have rolled and smoked joints with paper from bibles I still own; was that sacred treatment? No. I have told you what I believe. The bible says that the devils believe also [ in God ] and [ that when they think about it ] they tremble. What do you believe?

"Sacred" and "man-made" mean different things...something "sacred" can be "man-made."

In the sense that "sacred" means "dedicated or set apart for the service or worship of a deity", yes the Bible is Sacred for most Christians and the Old Testament portion of it is sacred for Jews.

The Bible is a collection of books, stories, history, essays, speeches, and poetry that was written over a period of about 3,000 years.

Some of it is indeed made-up stories and fables (called parables) and some of it is history.

Its a book. Everyone should decide that for themselves. Most are gonna say it is sacred and the word of god but theres is no way to prove either. It may be sacred to one but meaningless to another. Some stories of jesus and others would be considered cult like today. Believe in yourself and that you are a good human being. Whatever you have faith in its your own faith and nobody should tell you otherwise.

It is a book with stories written by man. But the contents are supposed to from God himself, but of course no one knows for sure.

There are some stories in the bible that do coincide with historical happenings, which prove them to be accurate. Of course stories in Genesis, like how God created the world can never be proven to be absolute truth.

It is only through faith, that people can believe that everything in the bible is true. But everyone else can always treat is as stories with moral behind them.

PS, please do not condemn people who do not believe in God, after all.. This is a very liberal world.
