turned it on. Several minutes later we realized that one of the bathrooms and two of the bedrooms were without power. I checked the reset button in the bathroom and it does not want to reset. Do these things go bad?

I replaced the porch light and it works fine but the other rooms are still without power. I checked all the breakers and they all seemed to be fine. I reset them just to make sure they were not tripped.

Then an even more mysterious thing happened. We have two floodlights over our garage that have never worked since we moved into the house 7 months ago. Now they are on, but the bathroom and bedrooms are still without power.

I checked every other reset button I could find in case they were linked but all of the other reset buttons seemed fine.

Perhaps, these things are unrelated but I'm not sure. Any advice?

Sounds like you dropped a neutral in your bathroom GFIC. meaning a bad connection. Turn off the breaker for that circuit. Remove the cover plate and then the recepticle. Ensure all connections are good and tight. If all is well there,it may be in the main circuit panel. Call an electrician for that..

Start checking your wiring for anything that doesn't look quite right, like chewed insulation, improper connections (soldered, with electrical tape), connections make outside of junction boxes, or just anything strange. You never know what the person ahead of you has done.

I would say that the reason you could not reset the breaker is because the short was still in the line. I wouldn't be surprised if some animal hasn't chewed through the insulation, got electrocuted and died lying on the bare wires. While your checking the wiring, check for smells like burned, hair or flesh.

Good luck.

They do occasionally go bad, but i suspect you are" half-tripped" somewhere. Do them 1 at a time, all the way off. wait a few seconds, all the way on. Record what each one controls and then you will know which one is bad. If the one in the bath is ground fault, you may need to reset the button on the ground fault breaker also.

Ken M and MT C are both on track. Try breakers first as it is easier, but I suspect it is broken wiring. Sometimes a surge, such as a lightbulb going, can do wanky things to broken wiring. It is probably the reason the floodlights have never worked before also.

You have a short somewhere in the wiring. It will take hours maybe days to find. If you know what your doing, happy seaching, if not find someone who does and get this taken care of ASAP. This i a potenial fire hazard.
