A peck is a unit of measurement. He used to pick them because they were one of his favorite foods. Since he's gotten older, and his stomach has gotten more sensitive, he doesn't eat them anymore.

I believe he picked a pickle of peppers. A peck is an infinate amount of pickled peppers and he picked them because he doesn't like cucumbers.
