Good question! I have had this come up with my kids. I have always touched base with the parents and asked them if my child would be attending any functions or activities that require the need for them to bring their own money.

At this point the parents will usually let you know whether they plan on paying or if your child needs to pay their own way.

If it is an amusement park, we have always paid, but the child's parents may be paying for everything. Extra spending money is a good idea also.

weeeeeeel,

i would talk and talk and talk to the families parents and see what they had in mind.

if they invited him i would guess they are willing to pay his expenses. i am not sure i would give money to a nine year old for spending money unless he has shown you an outstanding ability for handling money. My suggestion is that if they are willing to pay his expenses you should offer to give them some spending money for the kids, just to see where they stand on it. They will appreciate the offer and they may or may not take your money.

be sure and pack a few stamped postcards in his suitcase, so he can share with you his joy of the trip.

Talk to the parents first. See how long they are going and give the parents the money.
