can you report it stolen?

That way when the day comes and they try to take our guns...you could say that it was stolen...but really you would have it.

It'd be much more ethical to simply not say anything at all in the first place. The paperwork you have to fill out when you buy a gun is not the registration, in most areas. If you're in a big metro community that does require you to register on purchase, then you can always buy out of town. If it's not a true police registration, then those papers just go into the store's records. If the gun's never used in a crime, there's no reason to track it down, and no reason to get the sale records from the store. So, other than combing through millions of old sales records, the only way the cops will know for sure that you have a gun is if you open your mouth to friends. Word gets around. Nobody knows about my 9mm, and nobody has to.

Here is what "I will" do. I'm not suggesting you do it.

Get 2 units of the same pistol. Have the second pistol "marked" with the same serial number as the other. I have a duplicate copy of my registration (one for each pistol) If big brother comes to take my gun based on the registration, I will give big brother one of my pistols.

I will also make sure the other pistol is well kept and that both pistols will never be in the same place. Again, not suggesting you do it. But here where I live this is legal (dont ask).

You present an ethical choice between the value of possessing the gun and the value of honest expression. If all who know you think you will speak honestly, their trust is something of value that you might lose if lie about the gun. However, you may regard having the gun as more valuable.

Sometimes otherwise honest people will lie to protect something that is valuable to them. If the police come and want your daughter, then you might hide her and say you don't know where she is.

Schindler, the main character in "Schindler's List", lied to protect the lives of hundreds of his workers.

Yeah, expose yourself to charges of obstructing justice and falsifying a police report. Tell the pigs it's at your mom's place on the other side of the country.

Well, you *could* -- but if you ever had to use it to defend yourself or something, you could get hit pretty hard for filing a false police report.
