Implementation of the No Child Left Behind Act was one of the most, if not the most, disastrous "educational reforms" ever fousted upon the U.S. education system.

Because of the No Child Left Behind Act, school districts are required to teach and test to standards set by "education experts", based on "standards" these experts have determined through "extensive research" which always requires more "extensive research".

As a teacher, I can tell you there is no teacher who wants any child to "be left behind". But, I can also tell you that not all children can be brought to the same level with the same methods of teaching or the same length of time of teaching. Testing students every four to five weeks on a given subject, task, etc. is inconceivable. A teacher tests a student when that teacher is confident the student has received adequate instruction enabling them to successfully pass the required testing. Every student will not be able to process expected outcomes in x number of weeks.

Teachers are graduated and granted teaching certification by colleges, universities, and individual state Departments of Education. These young teachers are state-of-the-art educators, eager to teach, to inspire other young people with the enthusiasm for learning--and then they are smacked in the face with this "No Child Left Behind Act"!

I encourage anyone concerned about your child's education to contact your legislators to vote against renewing this most horrendous act. It comes up for renewal this year.

In this rush for testing, too often the students are being spoon fed with guidelines, what to study for on the upcoming test. My grandson comes home to study and he whips out the study guide and that is all he studies out of his book. If it is not on the sheet, he does not bother with it. This leaves a good portion of the book untouched and unread. This is scary. What is being left out of his educational experience because of the rush to test and maintain scores. His handwriting is terrible, his reading less that it should be because he does not have to worry about a word unless it comes up on his study guide. Amazing. What happened to good solid study habits and well rounded learning?

Instead of posting a 3 year old opinion piece why don't you do some research and find out how the NCLB program is working in practice?
