I unhooked the button and made sure the wires were separated, but it continued to ring. I had to take the chime unit off the wall and disconnect the wires to stop the ringing. My fear is that there is something in my attic that caused the electrical connection to be made and caused the chime to continue ringing. I've only got one button. Anyone have any ideas?

All the wiring in a doorbell is low-voltage and safe except the 120-volt connection to the transformer. If you need to replace the transformer, make sure you know how. I have never seen one constantly ring, but there must be a connection at the button or transformer that is shorted together. My guess is junk on the transformer in the attic. Cut off the power and clean all around the inside of the push button with a q-tip and alcohol. Let it dry and try it out. It is not a short in the wire or it would go to "ground" and not ring.

take a multimeter and check the voltage of the two wires going to the door bell that you took off the wall. if you have voltage there then you have a short in somewhere along the way from the door bell button and the door bell chime. It could be the chime "box" too. give it a good ol cave man electronics slap on the side and hook it back up. if it starts dinging again you can always disconnect it again. if it doesnt start ringing, go push the door bell button, if it rings then the chime box is probably going out.

I'll bet you have an animal friend living with you who has chewed the insulation off the wires. Put in a wireless system for about $30 and catch the little bugger.

you have got a short somewhere causing the line to ground out. you need stop the power to that line and fix or replace it. that is a fire hazard.
