You could keep a dog on a tether in the carport, but don't ask me how you keep the dog from crapping under the carport.
At least the cats are a little cleaner about it.
You might try treating the gravel with some sort of scented wood chips but that might not deter the cats--it could attract them. Try asking a landscaper if they know of anything that will repel the cats.

Lemon juice, mixed half and half and sprayed into gravel. This may need to be done a few times before it drives away all the cats and you will have to renew it each time it rains. Cats HATE the smell of lemon or anything that smells like it.

I found the best solution was to throw warm water over them, making it a little warmer each time. It didn't hurt them physically, I think it just hurt their dignity. After 3 treatments a cat wouldn't come back.

sit out side with your super soaker 2000, and when the little booger goes to taking a dump under the carport.... Fire Away!!! he will get the idea ( or a bath ). eventually
