It is illegal to burn the American flag, because that amounts to a desecration. That is according to many politicians. By that same logic, shouldn't the possession of a confederate flag be outlawed, since that ALSO amounts a desecration of the American flag? Our union is threatened by the burning of the American flag much as it is by the flying of the flag of our previous civil enemy.

That is, shouldn't it be illegal according to similiar Republican agendas?

It's not the same as flying the State flag of Louisiana, for example. That's because the confederate flag was supposed to apply to all of the states, not just the south. Plus, the Southern states now fly the American flag, "old glory".

Flying the confederate flag is not the same as flying a foreign flag, or the foreign flag of a enemy we fought in a war. That is because Americans were fighting other Americans. It is therefore an internal matter, a civil matter.

The Confederate battle flag stood for the idea that the individual states were separate entities loosely grouped under the Constitution. Consider the following two quotes. "If the Union can be preserved with slavery I will do it for the war is not about slavery, it is about saving the Union." Abraham Lincoln, in his first Inaguaral address. "If I thought this war was about slavery, I would give my sword to the other side." U.S. Grant, 1862 Consider also the timing of the Emancipation Proclamation. If the Lincoln Administration truly wanted to fight a war to free the slaves, Lincoln would not have waited until 1862 to release the Proclamation. Finally, statisitcs prove that less than 2% of the Southern population were the large plantation owners depicted in Uncle Toms Cabin. If you asked any 10 Confederate soldiers why they wore the gray, well, a young Alabama boy put it best after being captured at Shiloh. "Im fightin because you all are
down here."
Would the questioner have us burn the flag of Britain, a former enemy? How about Japan? Or Mexico? I'm going to close with another quote from a Lincoln speech, made shortly before his death. "With malice toward none, and with charity for all....." The basis of a democracy is the right to dissent. You certainly have the right to believe as you do, but not to the point where you desecrate the memory of close to half a million young men who gave their all for what they believed..

It is not illegal to burn any flag in the US, but, granted, it is very offensive, especially to veterans. Why do you implicate Republicans in your suggestion of making burning of the US flag illegal?

As for flying the confederate flag, just seeing it is offensive to some. Blacks in particular hate it. Given that at least a thousand of my relatives died for the Union, I could hate the Confederate Flag, too, with good reason.

The important reason that the Confederate flag ought to be shown is so we remember it. We need to remember the history of our country even if our ancestors arrived after the Civil War.

Our union is not threat ed by flying or burning any flag. That's ridiculous! Anyone who burns a US flag is letting more patriotic people know what little care they have for having the good fortune to be in the US. It would be great if I could wiggle my nose and send them to stay somewhere else in the world for a bit so they'd know why we are lucky here.

As a Republican in good standing. I say that our country does not need thought police or morals police. We have a fee society and sometimes that's messy, infuriating and full of dissent. So get used to it!

I don't think it should be illegal to fly to Confederate Flag because everyone is entitled to believe in what they want. Like the other person said, we can fly flags of other nations so why shouldn't we be able to fly the Confederate Flag. If they made that illegal then there shouldn't be any other flag flown on American Soil but Old Glory herself.

A. It is not illegal to burn the American flag, though many politicians have proposed making it so.
B. It should not be illegal to fly (or to burn) the Confederate flag for the same reason that it is not illegal to burn the American flag - people should be allowed to express themselves.

I think the Confederate Flag is repugnant, but I will fight to the death to defend your right to own and fly it. I'll just ridicule you for being an unAmerican terrorist.

I think it would depend on how it is displayed, and where it is displayed at. It is hard to say. I would never want to fly a confederate flag, because I am aware that many people would find that offensive, and I do not approve of what it stood for. Even so, I recognize the right to free speech, and I am aware that just because someone may be proud of their southern heritage, that does not mean that they are racist. This is a very difficult subject. I am having trouble answering this.

Nah, theres nothing wrong with the Confederate flag. There is actually a high school here in Texas that flies the Confederate flag along with the American flag. It's peoples rights and what they stand for. In the South we have pride, whats wrong with showing it.

Burning an American flag isn't a crime, thankfully. They never passed the amendment to make it so.

No, possession or flying of a confederate flag shouldn't be a crime. If you're so afraid of enemies, why aren't you signed up to fight in Iraq? What is there to fear from crazy people trying to live in the 1860s? What is there to fear from the political statement made by burning a flag? It's fearmongering "useful idiots"(stalin's words) like yourself that perpetuate useless legislation and stain the names of true Patriots.

you're right. but sadly the majority of the population isn't as insulted by the confederate flag as they are with burning the american flag which means, you can't do nothing about it.
