The potential negative consequence of telling a truth may overweigh the benefits....but only momentarily and temporarily. If we can step back and look at a bigger picture, and in a long run, truth would have more benefits. One truth can sort out many false anxieties created by a thousand lies. It only takes a little bit of light to dispel a lot of darkness.
I think Truth, though bitter, will always have better overall results.

IMHO, I believe that the potential negative consequences of telling the truth may and/or may not outweigh the benefits of sharing that truth. It depends on what that "truth" is and the situation at a given time...

It depends- if the truth is only told to free oneself of guilt, there is no benefit but to yourself. If it is told because of an injustice, then no matter what the consequences are for telling the truth, they outweigh the negatives.

The truth will set you free. But your truth can be tainted. As long as your intention is truth and not to harm then there are major benefits.
The truth hurts. Most people don't like to see their shortcommings, or their weaknesses and will mask them. If you can see through the mask and can reflect it to someone in a compassionate way then you may be doing them a favour. However, if they don't want to see it, then it is not your place to reflect it. That is integrity.
Conforming to another person's truths is not your truth and is therefore dissempowering. Being agreeable is a weakness if you don't really agree with them.

The bigger question may be What is truth? on a large scale it is a common belief at a cetain time in history.
On a personal level i believe it is always better to tell the truth now than wear the wrath later.

Sometimes, yes.
It's all relative to the damage the truth would cause, as opposed to the good it would accomplish. Anyone could give you some hypothetical examples that involve "extremes." That's easy. But as you approach the "grey area" toward the center, it becomes more difficult and more a matter of individual decision.

Sometimes I think 'truth' is over rated. In some situations it is imperative to speak the truth e.g court trial. But in everday life I think I would be hurting ppl if I tell them what I really think ....'that hair cut sucks ! that dress is awful' I preserve my energy for other things !

Always tell the truth. Even if it is, I don't know.

Not at all. It may hurt in the beginning, but when you lie it hurts deeper and longer.
