I like the idea of Hotwire because I just can't decide where to stay in LV, LA and SF. But I am worried that I will end up with a real dive of a place that has terrible reviews? What can I do if this happens? What are others' experience of using this site?

I have had good results from Hotwire - as long as I choose one of the higher up selections. After your stay, Hotwire asks you to rate the hotel and your stay - so I think they want to be consistent in quality.
Suggestion for Vegas: Go directly to the different casinos websites and click on promotional deals for accomidations.
I have receive great deals this way - better than Travelocity or Expedia.
I got a room at Hooters Casino a few months ago for $53 / night. I thought it would be a real dive - but although the hotel is a little old - and the casino small - the rooms were fine and the pool area nice.
Scenery was nice also.
Good Luck!
