Why more memory for the video card? Most games don't even use 512mb yet, unless you're running like 2048 by 1600 + resolution. 256mb is more than enough for all games on the market.
An all PCI cards don't have the power to run a 3d game anyway. Need agp or (better) PCI-E slots for the cards that can handle games. Goto www.tomshardware.com for benchmarks.
And for those who don't believe most games run 256mb, just goto www.tomshardware.com. It's the 256mb cards that are the faster cards, not the 512mb (it doesn't make any difference). The benchmarks prove it.

And note: the reason your game doesn't play is you're trying to use a on-board video card. Even the worse card sold on the market can stomp it. Again, look up the bencharks for it. It's all about the GPU NOT the memory. My 128mb Geforce 6800 can play many games on the market smoothly in 1024 by 768. Again benchmarks prove it.

Now I'm curious to know why that matters?

Most of what you see on a workstation is 2D intensive. 16MB is more than enough to handle that.

For gaming or other 3D rendering applications, a lot more memory is needed these days (128MB is the standard). If you need more, upgrading the PC's motherboard, CPU, and RAM would be a hell of a lot more beneficial than extra memory on a videocard. An old system would probably never be able to make use of it anyway.

You need to focus your attention elsewhere and only look towards PCI Express at this point (AGP is going the way of the dodo fast).

pci video cards are now close to legacy components for computers

edit: apparently they do have a 256mb pci video card, the radeon 9250 is a common one

also, if your computer is 6 months old, might as well get an AGP 8x card which runs 8 times faster then traditional pci. AGP cards are available upto 512mb.

NO - and why would you want one ?

if its PCI its going to be very old, last decades hardware/technology, the 256 mb RAM will be very slow and today's 128 mb RAM will be faster - and why pump money into a spec that died when clinton was in office ?

By the way, how is that new horse-and-buggy treating ? Must be tough getting back and forth to work in the coal mines...
