Steelers, like everyone's said
Its actually not that uncommon a thing...championship teams are often made up of solid cores, with a few high power free agent signings in the offseason to give a good team that extra boost over the top. After having such a great season, a lot of players go up for free agency (Randle El) or push to renegotiate their contract, as well as teams having to deal with performance bonuses from a stellar year, which forces GMs to make salary cap decisions. Older players or coaches also tend to retire while they're on the top (Bettis), so teams tend to lose a lot of their stars.
That makes building a dynasty very difficult, as Super Bowl teams, win or lose, often enter retooling or even rebuilding years following their SB appearance. The Patriots have only managed to stay elite for so long because they're so proficient at the retooling process and can manage to get production out of whatever talent they can sign.

It's fairly common -- by my count, it has happened 12 times out of 40, including four of the last eight. In recent years, the '06 Steelers, '03 Bucs, and '02 Patriots failed to make the playoffs as defending champions.

Steelers, and last one before that was the Patriots. Can't remember if that was the 2002 team or if they won back to back then didn't make it in 2003 though.Oh yeah forgot the Bucs were the ones that won after them. So guess that was 2 years in a row.

communities, at present, are so on the part of the different in terms of standard skills. oftentimes the communities that make it deep into the playoffs are those with the fewest injuries. As violent because of the fact the NFL is at present--extensive bodies that circulate rapid smashing against one yet another--it extremely is extraordinarily unusual for a collection to circulate 2 right this moment years with out important injuries.

If you count this year, it's the Pittsburgh Steelers. The last before that would be the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
