RE:
what does the term 4x4 or 4x2 mean when it relates to a truck ?

It refers to the number of wheels that have drive capabilities

a 4 x 4 means all four wheels are connected to the drive train and each will power your ride down the road (or up the hill)

a 4 x 2 means that only two of the wheels are connected (usually the rear tires) and that the others are (pardon a bad pun) just along for the ride (and a bit of steering).

ok>??

it means rear wheel drive only, not 4x4 meaning four wheel drive, a regular car with rear wheel drive is also 4x2

I guess the easiest answer is that the first 4 refers to the # of wheels on the truck & the second # to the number of wheels powered or driven by the drivetrain.

What Does 4x4 Mean

2016-10-05 11:07:46 · answer #7 · answered by ? 4 · 0 0

4x4 is where all wheels drive with options to have all wheels drive in low gear ( on some vehicles) or 2 wheels drive (usually rear wheels unless it is a transversally mounted engine), 4x2 is where only the rear wheels drive the vehicle (unless engine is transversally mounted) 4x2 is the same as saying Rear wheel drive (front wheel drive on transversally mounted engines). also all wheel drive is where al the wheels drive the vehicle, much like 4 wheel drive, but there is no option to have olnly 2 wheels drive.
