Football is a pretty complex sport. The easiest way to learn is just by watching and paying attention to the games. You could also buy a book I'm sure theres a "Football For Dummies" or somethinng else available.
I don't know where you live but if you're near a city that has a team, the NFL has really been trying to reach out to women. Most NFL teams offer a Football for Women class usually just before the preseason starts. Which would mean the class is probably sometime in late July or early August. I'm not sure about that though.

Repeat after me.
"Schottenheimer's head should be on a platter after this latest playoff choke."
It is a universally applicable statement. He is the coach for the San Diego Chargers, and has historically screwed his team over. This statement is valid in the past, present, and will be valid for as long as he coaches.
Besides that, you can cheer for Tom Brady. He's probably the most beloved guy in football right now. He is one of the best quarterbacks in the league, which means that he throws the ball really well. (Only one person per team is the delegated ball-thrower, so it takes a lot of skill to rise to the top.) He is nice, friendly, and humble, too.
I suggest picking a favorite team, but not one of the really good ones. If an NFL team comes from your home city (Wiki it if you don't know) then root for them. Otherwise, pick an underdog (Cleveland Browns, Houston Texans, for instance,) or just a team without a lot of fans, (Carolina Panthers, Seattle Seahawks, Denver Broncos, etc.) Then, search through Wiki and Yahoo Sports archives for any information that seems relevant.
DO NOT under ANY circumstance root for the Bengals, Ravens, or Raiders. They are thugs, and you don't want to associate with them.

The only thing I know is the most important. The Chicago Bears are going to play the Indianapolis Colts in the Superbowl. The Colts are going to win because I'm from Indy, and I love them. Peyton Manning is the quarterback of the Colts. The quarterback is the most important player on any football team. He calls the plays, and directs the team. From my experience, the guys will tell you to sit down and shut up if you try to ask questions during a game. They don't want to talk; they want to watch. So it's up to us to learn on our own, and good luck with that! Really! I've been trying for years.

Well the NFL preseason starts in August, regular season in September and the playoffs in January.
For football rules I would just do a yahoo/google search for "football rules." Also try typing in NFL into wikipedia and it gives you tons of info.
The good teams can change from year to year but the past several years its been the Colts, Patriots, Seahawks, Eagles and Ravens that have been the most successful

Just watch as many games (college and NFL) that you can in one season, and you will have everything you need to know down. People like John Madden will fill you in on the rest (like team standings and season schedules).

Just watch the ball and follow the ball and see who is throwing or running with the ball. Make comments about moving the ball and that will make you sound like a real fan. root for the same team as your date. nothing more you need to know except bring beer and buffalo wings frfequently. that is football. anymore will confuse you.
