When you apply to college you state the major that you want. You need to start a portfolio in high school to show at the college . You take the normal English, psycholgy, with a little science and math. You take art every semester and art education. It is a sequence so that when it is time to student teach you have finished all the prerequisites. You take courses in all the types of art so that you can teach them and can follow a major in art production that you prefer also. A masters degree is required after you start teaching. My daughters are both art teachers, One got her masters in Fine Art, oil painting, the other got her masters in art therapy. They both teach and take student teachers. Each college has a required program for everyone as well aws the major and minor. One of my girls did a minor in psychology and one in art therapy. In high school do a college prep program with an art sequence. You will be better prepared to teach if you go to a college for art ed than a bachelors in art and the education courses later. A good art ed college has the education courses geared to art and not general. Chec out the state colleges in your state and determine which is noted for art education. Some are better than others for certain topics. You will get an advisor in college but it is good to now what you want and what you need.

When you are accepted into a college or university, you will be assigned an academic advisor. This advisor will direct your course of study based upon what degree you tell him/her you want to pursue.

Ordinarily, anyone who is pursuing a degree in education, is required to take two semesters of English, History, Science, Math, and Humanities. Physical education classes may be required. A degree in Art, with a major in education will require x number of courses through the Art Department plus x number of Education (teacher-training) courses, requiring a total of at least 125 hours of college credits.
