Sodium is the major cation(positive ion) that controls the movement of water in the body. Potassium is another big player. To keep the volume in each cell stable, the body uses osmosis, diffusion and mediated transport mechanisms. Along with bicarbonate and chloride, sodium is what regulates osmotic forces, thus regulating water balance. Approx. 60% of the body is water. 40% of body weight is intracellular fluids. 20% is extracellular fluids(ECF). One third of that 20% of ECF is plasma. Sources of water are any fluid you drink and moist foods. Some drinks will dehydrate you, but that is because of the ingredients mixed in their water. Water is necessary for our health because it is the solvent in which all of our chemical reactions are formed. It lubricates our joints and is the main ingredient in the lubricant in the linings around our heart and lungs. It is what makes mucous sticky and an effective germ trapper. It keeps our eyes moist, forms our digestive juices and keeps our skin pliable. Water is the public transportation in our bodies that moves all the cellular and elemental passengers through us. Water consumed in a day is directly proportional to what we lose every day. There's more, but I'm pretty tired. Good luck on the homework.

About 70% of the fat free mass of the human body is made of water. To function properly, the body requires between one and seven litres of water per day to avoid dehydration; the precise amount depends on the level of activity, temperature, humidity, and other factors. Most of this is ingested through foods or beverages other than drinking straight water. It is not clear how much water intake is needed by healthy people. For those who do not have kidney problems, it is rather difficult to drink too much water, but (especially in warm humid weather and while exercising) it is dangerous to drink too little. People can drink far more water than necessary while exercising, however, putting them at risk of water intoxication, which can be fatal. The "fact" that a person should consume eight glasses of water per day cannot be traced back to a scientific source.[5] There are other myths such as the effect of water on weight loss and constipation that have been dispelled.[6]

The latest dietary reference intake report by the United States National Research Council recommended (including food sources): 2.7 litres of water total for women and 3.7 litres for men.[7] Water is lost from the body in urine and feces, through sweating, and by exhalation of water vapor in the breath.

Humans require water that does not contain too many impurities. Common impurities include metal salts and/or harmful bacteria, such as Vibrio. Some solutes are acceptable and even desirable for taste enhancement and to provide needed electrolytes. The single largest freshwater resource suitable for drinking is the Lake Baikal in Siberia, which has a very low salt and calcium content and is very clean.
