My next-door neighbor happens to be a vampire. The only time he can mow his lawn is after dark, which of course keeps everyone awake and some of the other neighbors have been complaining about waking up in the morning (after a restless sleep because of the constant roaring of a lawn mower) to discover bite marks on their necks. He's been reported several times to the Neighborhood Committee and they still haven't done jack about it because they're worried about being Politically Correct. He's actually a pretty nice guy, if it wasn't for the whole neck biting thing.

Vampires are certainly unusual in the real world except for the vampire bat that feed on the blood of animals. Mostly they exist in fiction. They enjoyed huge popularity during the middle ages as their other avatars - witches, werewolves, demons etc. Almost all cultures around the world believe in evil spirits that harm humans and it is from this that society has fantasized about such evil entities. Events, deeds, experiences which cannot be rationally explained at the time when they occur fan our perception of the evil. Today, some people form private groups or cults for vampirism - which is usually associated with some form of hedonism and heamatodispia (pleasure and kind of craving for blood letting - in different forms) and like to compare themselves with vampires.

I've met kids who think they're vampires and think they're a superior species. Adolescent angst takes all sorts of forms.
