My aunt is serious about staring a restaurant. I want to help her. We know the basics but, what are all the things we'll need to do?

Cash for a down payment. Depending on the type of restaurant and how she will run it, she may only have to put down a few thousand dollars to get financing, or she may have to be down tens of thousands. She can probably apply for an Small Business Loan. If she would like to purchase one, she can contact an agent to find out which ones are for sale.

For a start up, she will probably need her menu and a list of equipment or items needed to start the restaurant. She will also need to license with her state for several different reasons, including as a food establishment and a business.

A business plan is a must. But it is more important to have a well developed concept from which to build the business plan. Take time to find a chef and a restaurant manager that embrace the restaurant concept and understand the business plan. Secure enough financing to last at least 1 year or 18 months. Regardless of what most others may say, location is NOT everything. One of the most sucessful restaurants I have ever seen was located in an old and dead warehouse district long before others discovered this "location". Another was a "moving restaurant" on the back of an old truck that move from parking lot to parking lot. The owner's concept was simple, "lowest possible overhead, the freshest shrimp and fish caught that morning". Concept, financing, menu, wait-staff and advertising are more important!

Get money, learn how to cook, sneak in some illegal aliens in to work for you.....and know that an overwhelming majority of new restaurants fail within the first year. Good luck though!!
