The proof is in. When Britain confiscated civilian firearms in 1997, they sparked an annually escalating violent crime wave. Australia had a similar experience. They had decreasing violent crime until a massive gun ban and confiscation, then the trend reversed. Their government even killed the guy who inspired the "Crocodile Dundee" movies because he would not turn in his guns.
Florida had an interesting experience. They had a widely publicized police-sponsored training program for women to carry concealed firearms. The next year, rape dropped 80%.
I have watched enough prison interviews - the one thing a violent criminal fears is that the intended victim will pull a gun. They spend a lot of effort to pick potential victims who are not likely to be armed. They also move their residences to locations where civilians are forbidden to carry guns.
That is one reason Washington, D.C., is the murder capitol of the nation. Violent predators are aware their prey is defenseless.
As Americans have bought a flood of handguns over the last dozen years, violent crime dropped by about half. One of the biggest drops was after the gun buying spree due to the Y2K fear. More guns has paralleled with less violent crime, quite the opposite of the British experience.
It is not possible to disarm criminals who have easy access to illegal substances and contraband. It is possible to ensure the honest folks can fight back. Our Founding Fathers were wise to create the 2nd Amendment.

It will definitely not decrease crime. The cliche is true: When guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns. Only the good citizens will turn them in, so then the criminals can commit crime without worrying about getting stopped, hurt, or shot.
The 2nd Amendment wasn't just about protecting ourselves and our homes from criminals, but also from the government.
A famous quote of an individual that disarmed society is as follows: "This year will go down in history. For the first time a civilized nation has full gun registration. Our streets will be safer, our police more efficient, and the world will follow our lead into the future." Adolph Hitler, 1935.

Statistically, no. Florida had one of the worst violent crime rates in the US, until they passed a concealed carry law that allowed ordinary citizens to carry weapons - including firearms - to defend their lives. Since then, the crime rate has been on a steady decline.
Contrast that with countries like Great Britain, with firearm laws so draconian that one would THINK they'd reduce crime. And they have - they've reduced gun crime. Now that the citizens are guaranteed to be unarmed, though, violent crime with weapons other than firearms has skyrocketed.
Murder is already illegal, yet people kill people. People steal, even though that's illegal too. Those who are determined to perpetrate crimes against other people will continue to do so regardless of strict gun laws. By taking away legal means to defend ourselves, gun laws make the law-abiding people more susceptible to violent crime.
P.S. "Civilian" is a term that includes police officers. Try "ordinary citizens" instead.

So are you for banning knives, rocks, ropes, cars, fists, plastic bags, clubs, 2"X4", spoons, hammers, screwdrivers, saws, and all other tools I haven't time list?
ANY tool can be used as a weapon. An inanimate cannot do anything on it's own. A gun is no better or worse than the person that uses it. The same as the person that uses anything else that I have listed.
The way to decrease crime is to punish criminals severely, and not be a wuss about it. A criminal must be more afraid of society, not the other way around.

90 pound woman leaving her fast food job being attacked by a 220 pound rapist. Karate takes years to learn. Knives are a close range weapon. A gun can stop the guy in his tracks and make him leave without a shot being fired. As the old expression goes, "God made man, Sam Colt made men equal."
As far as crime rates, the states that passed a Concealed Weapon Permit law, saw the greatest decrease in violent crime. (Lott Study, University of Chicago.)....Nations that banned guns, saw a big rise in violent crime. (England and Australia.).
Look at it this way. The nut cases with guns go to the schools because schools are gun free zones. Columbine. The recent Colorado school shooting... The recent Amish school shooting. When was the last time a nut case went to a police station and started shooting? (Arnold in the Terminator does not count.)
The nut cases are not so nuts, they go to where they are safe from any RETURN FIRE.......

That was tried here in America and that promoted more illegal firearms sales out of a panic, so you better believe we will not ever surrender our guns not ever to any government.
I hate to sound like a broken record, but if Poland and France had more weapons and all those people murdered in WW II they would have been saved? There would not have been a takeover if people would stick together here in America that will not ever happen here either. And don't think you can depend on making a phone call if some crazed person breaks in your house? We do what we have to and we must survive. so guns are a necessary way to avoid violence and panic.

As this issue has it's own pro's and con's, the Constitutional Right to Bear Arm, still gives right for any American citizen, passing all State, Federal, and local requirements, obtain and own a gun. Living in isolated areas, the response time for police to arrive for emergency's are crucial, and your life could depend on your sidearm or rifle. There is no doubt that there are irresponsible gun owners, that have made those who are gun knowledgeable, take a unwarranted slashing at the few rights that we still have, as citizen's of the US of A..

Actually... No, as statistics indicate, gun violence has been on the decline in the United States since the mid-90's and yet there are more guns in the world now than ever before. There is no evidence that supports the idea that fewer guns equals less crime.. infact quite the opposite, numbers don't lie.

No firearms for law abiding citizens only will make more crime. This has been proven time and time again. Go plant some flowers or paint something.

Yeah! That way we can be at the mercy of the government that everybody trusts so much! If you REALLY want to end crime, REQUIRE every adult head of household to CARRY a weapon in public at all times.
NOBODY would dare commit a crime if he thought he'd be shot at from 25 different directions at once!
