Ahhh gotta love it...My suggestion would be to grab yourself a used 75 gallon for these guys, really cool fish if you get a big enough tank to watch them hunt, 20 gallons, while will work for a couple of weeks it will be a losing battle. 20 gallons will get too messy even with an oversized filter on it, you will spend most of your time maintaining it, and the current will probably be too strong anyways. Get something bigger.

Piranha grow far to large for a 20 gallon tank. they are also very fast swimmers (to catch their prey) This means in a 20 gallon they are likely to damage themselves whacking into the sides of the tank. To have a few (they are a schooling fish after all) you need about 70 gallons or more (read preferably more) to have them happy As for filtration an aquaclear 70 is fine just don't overfeed them .

No filter is going to help because no pirahna is small enough for a 20 gallon tank. That is why you are having waste problems. The only things you can do to stopr the waste problems is to get a bigger fish tank.

If I put you in a 4 foot by 4 foot closet with only a bucket to go to the bathroom in, it does not matter how much air circulation there is, that closet is going to smell really bad in a day. For fish it's worse, not only do they smell it, they taste it, and feel it.
