Venezuela already functions without crude oil. They use technology that uses sugar cane instead of crude oil.
The USA has toyed with the idea of following Venezuela's lead; however, to forecast into the future ... the USA believes that depending on a single crop like sugar cane could lead us back to tragedy if the crop wasn't meeting demand (like with oil). So, the USA's working on getting close to the same technology as Venezuela but using agricultural waste ...we're mega close.
However, there would be temporary may-ham ... but in the long run ... it would UNITE the USA further; making us more powerful. The Middle East would suffer like never before, where civil war would the the smallest of their problems.

I guess it depends how large and permanent the disruption was. The current war in Iraq could certainly be considered a serious disruption of the oil supply coming out of the Middle East. Its hard for me to imagine any massive set of coordinated attacks doing as much to disrupt the oil supply as Hurricane Katrina did in the US.
So basically my answer is not much other then the kinds of things that have already been happening.

Raise the price of oil.
Make up a list of countries they can say the terrorists are from and invade.
Terrorism could not cut off the whole middle east, and there are other countries out there. I'd say a huge expensive effort might cut off 5 percent. Look at the list.

Short term, we would deal, use oil from other sources, limit energy consumption, seriously research alternative energy...long term, at this point in alternative energy development, no oil means no tractors run, very few crops yielded, few people, pigs, cows or chickens fed without these crops. A large percent of the population would starve, which would be good for the overpopulation problem. not that I wish that upon anyone...

If ur talking about the entire world, I think it`s a good possibility it could happen. It would practically bring the entire planet to its knees in regards to what crude oil is used for, beside gasoline.
Everything would be effected (trickle down syndrome)

I guess hand carts would be brought out from their resting places and also charcoal burning kitchen equipment (cookers).
Horses, donkeys and bullocks and cows would have real value again.
