this entirley is up to you, if you can't stand kissing an ashtray anymore, and the smell, not to mention the cost and the health risks, of second hand smoke, but also the health risks of your boyfriend, well, like i said if you can't stand these things to a breaking point, then well sit down talk to him and give him a heads up that it is either Ciggy's, or you.
But if you are not too concerned and would not leave him over it, well then you will have to learn to live with it, or at least use some reverse phsycology on him.
Good Luck

There is no question that smoking can be detrimental to an individual's health. That said, it is up to the smoker to determine whether his/her smoking is a "good" thing or a "bad" thing. Keep in mind that most smokers do not die from smoking related illnesses (only about one out of four do, so the previous statement is an example of how statistics can be presented in obfuscating manners). If, knowing the health risks, he decides that the pleasure he gains from inhaling nicotine (which, as a smoker I can tell you is quite great) outweighs these risks, then he should be allowed to smoke to his heart's content. If you vehemently disapprove of this behavior, you have two choices-- to learn to tolerate it or break off the relationship. If you choose the latter, then he MAY decide to quit smoking ( a difficult undertaking). If he doesn't, though, you cannot interpret this as an indifference to your feelings. Ultimately, you must decide whether or not his good points outweigh this minor flaw, and whether or not you can live with it.
P.S.
Contrary to popular belief, there is Zero (capital Z) hard evidence that "secondhand" smoke poses any measurable health risk to nonsmokers who reside with smokers. The environmental concentrations of carcinogens are way too low. Anything you have heard to the contrary is merely propaganda.

Any addiction is so hard to quit. Smoking is easier to quit than most drugs. However, it took 40 years for me to quit doing something stupid that I started at the age of 17. The only way that I quit was by the hand of God, true. He is not bad for smoking just keep supporting him and hint around to quit. If children are in the picture, insist that he not smoke in the house.

I think the thing to do the next time you catch him smoking - if you still want him to quit, is to make him smoke the entire pack in front of you. This will surely teach him a lesson. He will not want to smoke again.

Um-I believe you know the answer already--everyone, including him, has heard the facts regarding the adverse health effects of smoking. If you are just wanting someone to say it is ok, you need to think why you are asking. If you don't like his choices, including the smelly and filthy habit of smoking, move on to someone else. Certainly let him know that's why you are moving on to a new guy.

Your responsibility is to yourself not your boyfriend. He may well control or abstain in the future but you need to consider your own welfare. If he's going to serve a prison sentence , chances are that drink and drugs will be readily available. Subscribe to online help groups or Al Anon and similar groups.
