You need to give the television human qualities, or somehow make a reader sympathize or relate to the television through crafting your descriptions of the set in such a way as to suggest its human agency, its own human-like qualities. These may include such things as sorrow, frustration, or longing or whatever. So, how would a tv feel when the people come home and watch some mindnumbing crap? How would it feel if it were left turned off for a whole week? Answer those sorts of questions and you're on your way.

Personification is making something nonliving seem living. So maybe you could be like, "The TV is bored from having people stare mindlessly at it all day."

The television screamed. The television sucked viewers in. The television hypnotized it's viewers
TV's can't scream, persons can: personification

How about this--
As soon as I arrived home from work I knew he would get started...first, the evening news, then the sitcoms, and finally a movie and more news. He just wouldn't shut up...until I finally turned over and went to sleep!

1) "idiot" box, It just rants on and on unintelligently.
2) The TV must have a high IQ, look at all it knows. It has answers to most everything.
