If you think you want a guitar to play classic rock, then ask yourself the question, what sound do I want. Without going into too much detail, fenders and such have single coil pickups whereas gibsons and similars have double coil pickups, They produce different sounds. So, buy a guitar that most resembles the sound you want to copy. That being said, you can buy electric guitars less expensive than fenders and gibsons that offer great value for your money. Just visit your local dealer and try out their instruments. There are many sites on the web that offer reviews from users. Try out harmony-central and read up. One can go completely ballistic when it comes to detail but all in all, keep plugging away at the FUN in playing, forget the "SHRED" and stick to that sweet note at the right time and place. Too many starters think playing fast is where it's at, but the real music is in the music, that is, playing from the soul and heart. So buy a decent guitar and play those sweet melodies that bring tears to your eyes. Then once your confidence builds, add your desired speed with it. Happy playing.

Well Simple You want to play AC/DC and GN&R so angus uses a gibson sg and slash uses a Gibson les paul. The two guitars both use two humbuckers (double coil pickups) so go get your self an epiphone les paul or sg or something else with humbuckers. Don't get to caught up with the "Fender stratocaster" guys. Strats are nice I have one and a tele if you are into blues or weird sounds there great. But they are not the best guitar in the world there is no best guitar. It is all what is right for you. The person that said hendrix was the most versitile player ever might be high hendrix is one of the greats but more of a blues roots rock and he uses some jazz chops too. To the point play everything you can or go to the store and get someone to play it for you.

Go to a music store, plug em in and see which sound you like best fo the money. I own 4 brands of guitars and 2 amps. Epiphone Casino, Gibson Les Paul, Fender Strat and ESP KH-2. Amps by Peavey and Marshall. I use them all depending on what sound I'm looking for at the time.

You can play anything on a Fender Stratocaster. You can get pretty much any tone you want, and you can buy the proper effects pedals to do the rest. Who was the most versatile guitar player ever? Hendrix. Hendrix played a strat.

You can start with a Fender and then when you realize you are going to do it seriously, you will eventually end up with a Gibson. Those are the brands. There are a lot of models within each of those brands. Fenders start at $0 and go up from there. Gibsons start where Fenders leave off and go to the price of a small house.

Pick it!

FENDER STRAT is the MOST versitile guitar. they are the best for that reason! gibson do one thing....sound like a gibson. fenders can do it all! hendrix, SRV, clapton, dick dale, yngvie malmsteen all play strats which proves my theory! anyways, if you are just starting then get a strat. if you decide later on that all you want is gibson tone then get one but for now with experimenting stick fender....actually, strike that, NEVER GET A GIBSON!
