As a 7 time convicted felon I must agree. I spent 3 years at Valley Forge Military Academy when I was a child. If I had been given the chance to join the military instead of being rejected because of my record I would probably not have continued dealing drugs. Also having a bunch of convictions on my record makes life next to impossible. It is very hard to find work so I am self employed. I often have a very difficult time even finding a place to live because of background checks by landlords. I don't believe the war is right but if I could get my record sealed or expunged, so I could start over, by going to Iraq and surviving to come home I would go in a heart beat. In fact if given the chance 15 years ago to make a career from the miltary I would have.

Offenders should not be forced to go but should be given the choice. It would be much more rehabilitating than prison where there are drugs and you must become an animal to survive.
Oh and for the complete idiots that think that people in prison sit around and do nothing your out of your mind. Everyone gets a job in prison unless they are too dangerous to be in population.

The vast majority of people in prison are there for drugs and other "victimless"crimes. When I did time in Virginia there were guys doing ten years for "habitual driving on a suspended lisence". Most of these people pose no actual threat to anyone.
The discipline of the military is exactly what most of these people need.
It would not be the first time the US gov't has done this either. During Viet Nam a fairly standard sentence for many low level crimes was the choice of two years in the Army or one year in the penitentary. So all of you people who think they would be deserting or turning their guns on society need to stop playing those stupid video games and come back to reality.

It could be done with certain offenses, but generally speaking criminals don't make good soldiers.

For one thing, they generally lack education and have mental issues that get in the way. There are some exceptions, and offering military service as an avenue to exoneration from crimes can work.

We actually don't have that much of a recruiting problem right now. Most services can meet recruiting quotas with no problem, and we get better people offering education or cash benefits.

As a Navy Veteran I find it to be an insult that my service to this country could be reduced to the level that people look at this as a crap job that a criminal would/could do.

Thank you.

My father, uncle, both grandfathers, 2 brothers, 3 cousins...and I really could go on...they thank you too.

I would say a good guess would be that the majority of those that are for this have never served.

EDIT TO ADD:

Maybe we should put YOU on a carrier in the middle of the ocean with 3000 criminals on it. BRILLIANT!

BAD IDEA-you want to arm a person who has already demonstrated a willingness to disregard the law? How likely are they to follow the directives of a commanding officer?

I think that this is somewhat of an insult to the highly qualified and dedicated people serving in our armed forces to suggest that criminals can be depended upon to serve in the military.

I can't believe that you have so little regard for what the soldiers, past and present, have done, and are still doing for us!!! The soldiers are people of integrity, loyalty and pride, and have given everything they have for us to live the life we enjoy. To think that you want to send common criminals out there, to do that job, it is demeaning to what has already been done. And besides that, giving the criminals gun...yea, that's a bright idea! DUMB @$$!!!

I agree with those who have answered saying that criminals cannot be entrusted with a job that is for those who are fighting for their country and not just because they are forced to. I also agree with those who have said that criminals should be forced to work. Our tax dollars are paying to house, feed and clothe them. Why can't they pick crops, or perform any otherwise low paying not so glamorous tasks?

Criminals cannot accept the discipline necessary to a military force, and are generally ignorant of the special skills needed to use and maintain today's complex weaponry.

I don't see why not "the perfect solution" a solider with no morals or scruples at all "the perfect killing machine" the insurgency would give up after a week...
The only problem with that is how to regulate the non taking of Innocent lives that would be the only problem that i would see...
Also segregate them into special assault units or one way missions another words don't put them with regular combat units and make them infantry only!
Discipline is learned you are not born into it my dad was a DI in the air force and always told me that he could discipline a skunk if it was de-scented!

Good idea.
Hmmm. Maybe we should give the army to the Hell's Angels to administer.
(Or not!).
.
Or, maybe start an army of psychopaths!
Mmmm. Our politicians are psychopaths.
(Not!).

Yeah....a lot of thought must have gone into that one. Give a criminal a great big gun and cut him loose on society.
