The head covering that Jewish men wear is called a yarmulke (pronounced yu-moo-ku). Another name for it is kippah. A Jewish person is supposed to always have his head covered and if he does not have a kippah, he could wear a cap or anything else.

When you say "on top" are you referring to his head, or on top of his shoulders?

The CAP on his head is a kippah or yarmulke. The CLOTH or shawl around his shoulders and/or neck is a tallit.
